Romantic Relationships & Autistic Teens

It is amazing to me that so many people do not understand what Autism is. In fact, if not for British literature, female writers, and an observant and persistent girlfriend, I might never have figured it out at all. The USA is about seven years behind the UK in its understanding of the spectrum, although it is catching up. It literally explained why my entire life has been the way it has been.

It’s essential to have patience and understanding when misunderstandings arise. As a partner of someone with Asperger’s Syndrome or on the autism spectrum, it’s vital to recognize that they may perceive things differently than you do. What may seem obvious to you might not be apparent to them. Dating someone with Asperger’s can bring a unique perspective to relationships. People with Asperger’s often have focused interests, which can be fascinating to learn about and share. This intrinsic motivation can lead to success in their careers and personal goals.

Famous People You Didn’t Know Had Asperger’s Syndrome

I’m clear that this conversation never happened between the two of you. If you’re like most NT women, you didn’t believe it was your job to do anything other than “be” and expected your AS boyfriend to act “normally.” No one asked you to give up your needs. But if you really love an AS, you have to EXPRESS your needs in clear and concrete terms. If he loves you back, and is intelligent, he will try to figure out what the heck you are talking about, but don’t expect it without a conversation. I already told you, so why do you need for me to keep saying it?

Give a compassionate response over a pure honest one. When you’re on the autism spectrum, you often value the truth and find it difficult to lie. This can be a good trait, but it may come across as too blunt in certain situations.Understand when it is best to give a small “white lie” so as to not hurt your partner’s feelings.

To this day, she’s still one of my dearest friends, and one of the sweetest persons you will ever meet in your life. And like anyone else, aspies, as they are fondly referred to, certainly are capable and deserving of love and affection, even romance. Liane Holliday Willey, a well-known writer, who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, once included the need to hold her husband’s hand for five minutes a day. It’s not like people with Asperger’s are cold and unloving, it’s just that they should be reminded of things like that. Now with that out of the way, let’s list some Asperger’s dating sites.

Still, I’m just amazed that your husband enjoyed dating other women while he was married to you. The diversity of human beings astounds me, and clearly this includes AS as well as NT. May I suggest that you look further into AS- it is quite complex. NT-AS relationship dyads are even more complex, and can hardly be summed up in a brief five point list.

I knew our friendship would never be an even two way street. Even though I have told him flat out what things he did that hurt my feelings, , he will forget and not change the behavior. At times he seems to understand and will make an effort, but our friendship is still mostly all about him.

To me, he is an intellectually engaging, kind hearted person but his behavior is off the chart difficult to understand for a NT like me. Now I will admit I’m the type of person, if anyone upsets me I let them know and we discuss it.. If I don’t like them I won’t waste my time.

Aspies may ask obvious questions, which will come across as irritating to others, but it’s just their way of understanding social and emotional situations. Sometimes, we all need clarifications, and it’s okay to provide others with answers. Because it defies easy-to-follow logic, aspies don’t really understand the big idea of romance—but then, who does? This doesn’t mean they can never be sweet or romantic, though. It just means they have to understand what is sweet and romantic, and why it is, through patient explanation and reasoning.

Magnesium, curcumin, and omega-3s are just three supplements that may help ease anxiety. Learn about the 10 best anxiety supplements of 2022. Conversations aren’t the only thing you can schedule. Consider making regular plans for enjoyable activities like movie night, pizza night, outings with friends, or even alone time. A simple solution is to pay attention to the words you use. This works because words are what your Asperger’s partner will notice.

In fact, it does some of the communication for you, because it can change the paradigms of both you and the other person so that your presuppositions are not running at cross purposes. You know how to interpret each other, and, crucially important, what’s going on with yourself. I continue to learn every day — and I hope never to stop. Another area that can badly affect relationships is emotional regulation. Just as the neurological system can be less than efficient in handling sensory input, so can it be with emotional input. A person with Asperger’s may feel raw emotion, but not be able to immediately identify it or its cause.

If that’s present, I mention that it does run in the family. What I’ve said over and over is that AS DO have empathy. They just do not have it like NT’s have it. It requires more of NT’s to help the Aspie KNOW what they are thinking and feeling. I can have someone tell me about their life, and while I may not agree with them, if I love them and trust them, I want to understand.

I’ve loved a man on the spectrum for 5 years. In the beginning I thought he was just very different and somewhat strange but I found his ways “charming”. Fast forward to now, he has grown to trust me, love me in a way that is so obvious to me now. We don’t live together but he makes it clear that I am an important part of his life as he is mine. Once I accepted our differences as well as our similarities our friendship has blossomed into something beautiful. I’m more emotionally mature as a result of our friendship and my ego gets told to “shut up” quite often.

What are high functioning people with Aspergers?

I’m officially diagnosed with depression, anxiety disorder, and ADHD. My mom once asked the nurse at the mental hospital if she could do a screening for aspergers for me, but the nurse said that since i’m a girl, i probably wouldn’t have it? Are girls underdiagnosed for aspergers often? I’m going to my psychiatrist today and i’m wondering if i should bring it up.
